The
centre of shopping is undoubtedly the Night Bazaar. Every
evening Chang Klan road comes alive with countless pavement
stalls and handicraft centres selling a myriad of goods
at knock down prices, but be sure to bargain hard! Despite
recent crackdowns by the police, counterfeit goods are
in abundance here and is the place to come for cheap DVD's,
Gucci handbags, Rolex watches and fake name brand clothing.
You will also find a large range of hill tribe products
here.

A
relatively new addition to the Chiang Mai shopping scene.
This market sets up on a Sunday evening reclaiming a couple
of the main streets through the old city for a pedestrian
shoppers paradise. Not only are there a wonderful array
of local handicrafts and clothes on offer here, various
entertainments are provided throughout the market adding
to the flavour. Feeling peckish? Well don't worry, just
make your way to one of the temples along the way where
you will have an endless choice of Thai favourites at
very cheap prices! this is a lovely market which captures
the flavour of Chiang Mai. If you are in town on a Sunday
do not miss it!
Where: In the old city along Ratchadamnoen and Prahpokklao
Roads. Sets up around 4pm. and finishes about 10pm |
Saturday
Wualai Road Walking Street Market |
Smaller but very similar to the Sunday Walking Street
Market. This market sets itself up at around 4pm Saturday
afternoon. If you are not going to be here for the Sunday
market then this is the next best thing.

Sankamphaeng
& Borsang |
Those
serious about buying Thai handicrafts should arrange a
morning trip to San Kamphaeng in the east. Traditionally
the Chiang Mai handicrafts industry has based itself here
and if you're buying in bulk significant savings can be
made. Don't forget to check out the village of Borsang
famous for its colourful umbrellas.
Where: Many of the craft shops and factory outlets
are about 10-15km out of town. Ideally hire a motorbike
or take a tuk tuk as the craft cent ers are well spread
out along The Sankampheng Rd or contact us here at The

Check
out this area south west of Chiang Mai. Here you will
find many factories and outlets specializing in wood carvings,
antiques and wooden furniture, but again you will find
a whole range of handicrafts for sale here. At many outlets
you will be buying direct from the manufacturer so you
can be assured of a good buy. This is why many traders
and exporters buy here.
Where: Head out of town on the Hangdong Rd for 15Km,
turn left at the first major junction in Hangdong and
you will find the craft market on your right after a couple
of kilometres. There are also a lot of factory shops strung
out along this road. |

As
well as the well established tourist and handicraft markets
Chiang Mai is littered with Local markets. Selling the
diverse range of goods needed for everyday living in Thailand.
These are worth a visit just for the sights, sounds and
aromas even if buying isn't on the agenda. One worth a
visit in Chiang Mai is Warorot Market at the top of Chiang
Moi road near the Ping River. Fresh fruit, dried food
stuffs, clothes and lots lots more feature here in an
indoor multilevel market area. If you want to experience
some real Chiang Mai street food this is a good place
to come in the evenings as food vendors set up along the
street here.
