Package Overview

If you are not in a hurry then this can be a very rewarding way to get yourself to Luang Prabang from Chiang Mai. On this package you will spend two days on the Mekong river meandering its way down to Luang Prabang. The package will include your transport from Chiang Mai to Chiang Kong by comfortable air-con minibus as well as a night in a guest house on the banks of the Mekong River. The second day you will be taken to the boarder crossing on the Mekong River. Here you will board one of the slow boats to Pakbeng village where you will spend the second night. On the final day you will board the slow boat again and finish the day in Luang Prabang.

Itinerary

Day 1: Chiang Mai to Chiang Khong

10:30am or 12: 30pm. Dep. from Chiang Mai by minibus (a/c)
16:00pm. or 18:00pm. Arr. at Chiang Khong & overnight at the guest house. Dinner included.

Day 2: Chiang Khong to Pakbeng Village (Laos)

07:30am. Breakfast at the guest house
08:30am Transfer to the border, take the boat crossing to Huay Xai, stamp Laos visa at the border.
10:00am Take the slow boat for 6-7 hours to Pakbeng Village,
17:00pm. Arrive at Pakbeng village and overnight here (pay for your own accommodation).

Day 3: Pakbeng Village to Luang Prabang

09:00 am Depart from Pakbeng village to Luang Prabang (Lunch not included)
17:00pm Arrive at Luang Prabang pier.

Facts

Please note that this is not a luxury travel package. The accommodation provided in Chiang Kong is basic although you will find it clean and you will have your own bathroom and hot shower. The transport on the Mekong is by a traditional cargo boat which has been adapted to carry passengers. The seating often consists of wooden benches which can become a bit uncomfortable after a seven hour stretch on the Mekong River so please be prepared for this. We suggest bringing a cushion. Some days the boats can be quite comfortable with an open deck so you can kick back and relax. The type of boat you get depends on the day you travel. This package does not include accommodation in Pakbeng. You have to find this yourself. However there are plenty of guesthouses in Pakbeng catering to all budgets and you will find nearly all of them within a few minutes walk of the boat pier.
